Bamboo Charcoal Water Filter

£4.40

These Bamboo Charcoal water filters offer a natural and zero waste way to filter tap water. There are 4 bamboo charcoal pieces packaged in a reusable natural cotton bag.

Bamboo charcoal is super porous and works like a sponge, absorbing impurities into its pores. Bamboo charcoal water filters are traditional and well-known in many parts of the world. This high quality bamboo charcoal is carefully made in Japan, in clay kilns, by experienced charcoal makers.

Bamboo charcoal has an added benefit in that it “mineralises” the water during initial use by slowing releasing minerals – potassium, magnesium, into the water.

To use: use 3 – 4 pieces in a 1 litre jug of water.

  1. Wash in running water to remove powder (do not use detergent).
  2. Boil for 10 mins in a pan of water to sterilise & allow to cool and dry.
  3. Place in a jug and fill with tap water (charcoal may float when new but it will tend to sink after a week or so of use).
  4. Leave for 8 hours or more for best results. You can leave it in the fridge to chill if you like. It’s then ready to drink.
  5. Re-sterilise once a week by repeating step 2.
  6. Replace with new charcoal after approximately 2 months.

Why bamboo charcoal?

Bamboo charcoal is used because it has a larger number of porous cavities compared to other wood charcoal, giving it better filtering abilities. Bamboo is also a fast growing plant so supply is abundant and sustainable.

Charcoal regulates moisture and reduces odours as well as inhibits mould and keeps food fresh. When you’ve finished using it as a water filter you can reuse it. Just make sure the pieces are completely dry before reusing and occasionally put them out in the sun to breath. You can reuse them for 6-12 months.

Ideas for reusing your Bamboo Charcoal:

  • place in mouldy kitchen and bathroom corners
  • put in places where you keep food and fruits
  • place in smelly areas for example the fridge, toilets, shoes
  • put in places you want to keep very dry such as wardrobes and chest of drawers

When it’s time to dispose of your bamboo charcoal you can crush it up and return it to the earth by either burying it in the garden, putting it in pot plants or in your compost.
